Indian curries in Uganda

Posted by Pi on April 6, 2009

While we’re continuing to mention good food outside Belgium, let’s bring up this little gem in Kampala.  This Indian restaurant off Kampala Road serves up excellent versions of rich curries and other spicy meat and vegetable dishes.  At the time we ate here, we were thinking about the lack of good Indian restaurants around Brussels and how strange it was that we sated the craving in Africa.  Next time you’re in Kampala (via Entebbe through KLM or Brussels Airlines), stop off at Haandi.  They had much more spice than many places in Brussels.

Oysters and mermaids

Posted by Pi on March 25, 2009

The next time you take your flight from Brussels to New York City, stop by the Mermaid Inn to try the scrumptious seafood.  If you can stand the crowd and don’t mind waiting at the bar for a seat, the seasonal oysters with zingy ginger-lemon sauce really can hit the spot.  Not a fan of the raw?  Then the subtle seared scallops with garlic greens and cream sauce can cool you down.  The intensely flavored crabcakes with shredded radish are the real winner, though, by far.

Places like this show me that Brussels definitely could scale up its seafood fare.  Mussels can be great, but I like some delicious crab once in a while, too, even if it runs a little pricy.

Tastes Like Burning

Posted by Pi on February 15, 2009

From all the way in South Africa, there came into an innocent house in Belgium a simple, solid bottle of clear Witblits.

I will let the commentary surrounding this liquor during a tasting speak for itself.

“It’s supposed to be the South African version of tequila.”

“Guys, I’m warning you…”

“It means ‘white lightning’.”

“I don’t think we’re the right people to review this.  Only people who really appreciate hard liquors should taste this and judge it.”

“You know, if you smell something long enough, eventually you can’t smell anything at all, even if it smells really bad.”

“Fifty percent?!”

“Should this be cold?”

“Let’s try it.”

“Those are huge shot glasses.”

“This smells too much like tequila.  I can’t drink this.”

“If I were out partying I’d have some with you.”

“It smells good!”

“Oh my God.”

“Give me just a little bit.”

“…maybe if it had any kind of good smell…”

“I might as well drink rubbing alcohol.”

“I’ll taste it if you do it.”

“It’s not so bad.”

“Yeah, it smells a lot worse than it is.”

“It’s burning right… [cough] here.”

“Did you hold it in your mouth for a while to taste it?”

“I don’t have to brush my teeth now.”

“Not bad.”

“It’s pretty good, actually.”

“I bet it catches fire.”

“No way.  I don’t think so.”

“Do you have a lighter?”

“Doesn’t seem to be wor– IT’S BURNING!”

“We can clean the table with it.”

“Take a picture! Where’s the camera?”

“Turn off the lights!”

“It’s going out.”

“That plate is hot.”

“Do you have any whiskey?  We can mix it.”

“Don’t you want to take the rest back with you?”

“No, let’s leave it here for next time.”

“Good night!”

Fine Filipino Fried Chicken

Posted by Pi on January 26, 2009

I could really go for some fried chicken right about now.  I’m reminded of the kind I got in Chicago at a Filipino restaurant in December:

Mmmmm, it was so delectable, light, and crispy.  Sure beats Hector’s Chicken.  Brussels needs to upgrade on its soul food, Filipino or not.

For the love of the sea

Island delight

Oh the delightful and the delcious. Sometimes you have to search far and wide in order to find it.  Sometimes you have to go all the way across the world. Crunchy tempura-breaded exterior. Luxurious crab and avocado combination in the interior. Wasabi-based sauce for that bit of zing. This foodaholic waits for the day when such a scrumptious sushi dish can be found right here in Brussels.

***Update on this post: a pretty close second can actually be found at Hana, on Place St. Boniface. Check the relevant post about this place!
