Sorry for the hiatus, folks, but we expats take vacation on a Belgian schedule, too, sometimes. Before we come back, take a look at this great cone of creamy lemon ice cream I tasted recently over in Venice, something very different from all the icier sorbets and sherberts I’ve had in the past. Excellent stuff.

Simply delicious. An egg baked directly into a hot pizza full Parmesan cheese and bacon really hits the spot, especially when in the middle of Venice. It was a masterpiece of flavor painted into the dough, and the rich yolk in the center completed it.
Does Mamma Roma’s have this sometimes?

Rich buffalo mozzarella. Succulent and sweet tomato wedges. Shredded basil pesto with coarse salt and strong olive oil.
The best Caprese salad I’ve had in Belgium(~12 euros) by far came from Meet Meat between Schuman or Maelbeek. Each component was key, and the saltiness, tartness, and herb flavors complemented each other perfectly. What an excellent starter, especially for a South American steakhouse restaurant where meat is king.

Its a Brussels classic. And if you have been here longer than a few months and don’t know it, you’re either a hermit or don’t like pizza (the latter not being possible so must be the former)! Mamma Roma’s was originally only off of Place Flagey but they have been successful enough to have expanded to Place Chatelain and Place Jourdan as well. They have by-far the best Roman pizza in all of Brussels, and for cheap too. I eat a lot, and I never end up spending more than 7-10 euros. They have variety too and you order by the square (not the slice) so its easy to try different pizzas. Some of my favorites include the white pizza with potato and truffle sauce, the tomato and basil without cheese but oh-so much flavor, and the fresh mozzarella and cherry tomato which is juicy and delicious.
